We have just received our first shipment of mini topper silicone moulds. They dont just have to be used for sugarcraft. Silicone adapts for all sorts of decorating products from concrete to ice.

What we love most about these little moulds is they are very reasonable at only $12.99 per mould (you will want 5) - and the range is contemporary and fun.

Our favourites -
The cameo

Lego Mould

Rudolph Reindeer

Make This Fabulous Bird House Cake

To make this delightful cake please use the following instructions:
SIZE: 10” two-layer, 8” three-layer and 6” two-layer tapered tiers
SKILL LEVEL: Moderate

Get crafty with Lucks Designer Prints™! This precious birdhouse is great for a wedding, shower, or birthday!

1. At least two days ahead, prepare the bird and the birdhouse. First, find a birdhouse pattern on the internet or design one yourself, then make a paper pattern of it. Roll out some white fondant and using your paper pattern, determine how large a surface will need to be covered in Designer Prints™; this will help avoid unnecessary waste of both fondant and Designer Prints™. When you determine how much of each pattern you will need for the front, back, and two roof panels, cut these fondant pieces slightly larger than you will need with a Ribbon Insertion Tool with a pointed blade or an X-acto type knife.

2. After cutting out these panels, slightly dampen them with a fine mist of water, being careful to avoid puddles. Attach the striped pattern from the Pinkalicious Designer Prints™ to the front and back panels, and the brown polka dot pattern to the roof panels. Tip: you will need to trim the top and bottom edges of the Designer Prints™ so that you will be able to cleanly line them up top to bottom—these panels will be taller than the Designer Prints™ strips format.

3. When the designer prints are attached, use your paper patterns to cut more precise panels. Remember to cut a larger hole in the front panel for the door, and a small one below it to attach a bird rest if desired.

4. For the bird, follow the steps above, using a paper pattern of a bird instead of a birdhouse, and using the white polka dot pattern from the Pinkalicious Designer Prints™ set.

5. Let all pieces dry.

6. When the birdhouse panels are dry, glue them together in stages with white royal icing. Let dry.

7. Mix a good amount of rose pink icing by mixing a small amount of Lucks Red Airbrush Color in a white icing base. Assemble and ice the cake with rose pink icing.

8. Using a #8 plain round tube and rose pink icing, pipe a beaded border around the base of each tier.

9. With chocolate or fudge icing, or with brown icing mixed with Lucks Buckeye Brown Liqua-Gel Color (Coming Soon), pipe a series of stylized branches with a #5 plain round tube.

10. Roll out some extra thin fondant and apply half a strip of the brown polka dot Pinkalicious strip with a light mist of water. Cut out 25-30 petals and leaves either by hand or with specialty cutters. Attach to cake around branches as shown.

11. Attach bird and birdhouse to cake with a dab of icing.

Decorating idea by Charra Jarosz

First Impression Moulds are on their way

Button Silicon Mould Set

We have had so much enquiry for these handy silicon moulds. They are useful for so many different applications. They can be baked in up to 450degrees. You can use sugarpaste, polymer clay, soap moulding, chocolate, jelly, ice, hard candy (toffee types) and just about any other type of product that can be squished into tight corners and set.

The sleeping baby mould is one of the most popular moulds that First Impression Makes. These will be in stock in approximately 3 weeks time.

Baby Sleeping Mould

Here is some tips on using the moulds with Sugarpaste and chocolate to get that lovely professional look for your products. This information is supplied by First Impression Moulds.

Sugarpaste and Pastillage USE

Take a piece of sugarpaste that you think will be enough to just fill the mold, knead it until it is smooth and roll it into a ball. Take a dusting puff* and dust the ball, then press it into the mold, making sure you capture all the detail and any undercuts*.

You can dust the top as you press the sugarpaste in if it begins to feel sticky. If you have excess paste after filling the mold you can either cut it off with a pair of scissors (careful not to clip the mold), pinch it off, or run a straight edge spatula across the top to remove the excess, then smooth it again.

If the mold is deep, highly detailed or has undercuts, you must place the filled mold into the refrigerator or freezer for 15-30 minutes depending on how deep the mold is to allow the sugarpaste to set firm and to make for easy de-molding.

De-molding:

After you have pressed your sugarpaste into the mold, you can simply pop the piece out by gently holding the mold with your thumbs on top and fingers on the bottom of the mold and flexing it out and up.

If you have placed the filled mold into the refrigerator or freezer simply remove it and de-mold, then place the finished piece on waxed paper to air dry.

* Dusting puff - fill the foot of one knee-high pair of pantyhose with a 1/4 cup of cornstarch, then tie it and cut off the excess, leaving about an inch extra at the top for holding onto.

* Undercuts - portions of the piece that are deeper into the bottom or side of the mold than the rest.

Tips

One of the most important things to remember is that you must place your filled mold in the freezer if it is a deep mold that is highly detailed, or has undercuts.

When molding any type of sugarpaste you shouldn't dust the mold itself because you will lose detail.

You can use shortening instead of cornstarch to keep the sugarpaste from sticking to your hands, just use a tiny amount on your hands.
You can dust, paint or airbrush finished pieces. We recommend Sugarpaste, LLC's food color.
NB Do not store your finished sugar pieces in the refrigerator.

Chocolate Making with the Moulds

Fill your mold with chocolate halfway up, and then tap it a few times against the counter to get rid of any trapped air and to get the chocolate into any detail, then fill the rest of the way and tap again. Continue to tap until you see no more air coming to the top. If you over fill just scrape the excess off using a straight edge spatula. Place the mold in the refrigerator until set.

De-molding:

Very carefully pop the piece out by gently holding the mold with your thumbs on top and fingers on the bottom of the mold and flexing it out and up.

Tips

*It is best to use molds that don't have undercuts or deep detail.

Do not store finished chocolates in the refrigerator, store in an airtight container at room temperature.

Undercuts - portions of the piece that are deeper into the bottom or side of the mould than the rest.
